Groups Condemn Hartford Billboards
The Middle East Crisis Committee and the organization People of Faith CT strongly criticize the sign on a Hartford billboard on I-84 that claims support for the Israeli state to be a demand of God. The billboard at the Sisson Avenue exit features U.S. and Israeli flags and quotes Genesis, "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you." The billboard says "A friend of Israel is blessed by God."
Stanley Heller, MECC Chairperson said, "It's appalling that some misguided people try to fan the flames of religious conflict when it comes to the Middle East. Rather than seeking to curse those who oppose Israeli wars and violations of human rights these people should quote many passages in scripture which call for peace. The billboard is particularly offensive at a time when the Israeli state has put 1.4 million people in Gaza under siege and when its summer attack on Lebanon left over 1,000 dead and hundreds of thousands of cluster bombs and mines on Lebanese soil.
Frank O'Gorman of People of Faith CT said, "The billboard's message assumes God's approval of the actions of Israel and the United States in the Middle East. On the contrary, Israel's apartheid domination of Palestine and America's ongoing occupation of Iraq are an affront to the God who liberates the oppressed and confounds military superpowers in every age. These two nations have elicited not God's blessing, but God's rebuke."
