Rachel Corrie Play Cancelled in Canada

CanStage, Canada's largest not-for-profit theater, has changed its opinion and decided not to present "My Name is Rachel Corrie" as part of its 2007-2008 season. It just closed a successful two month run in New York City.

Supposedly Martin Bragg artistic producer decided that the play wasn't as "powerful" on the stage as it appeared in its script. However, the entertainment trade paper Variety reports the real reason: Jewish fanatic defenders of Israel, willing to call a play about young woman murdred by Israelis "offenseive to Jews".

Variety reports, "Jack Rose, from the CanStage board -- while admitting he has neither read nor seen the script -- said that 'my view was it would provoke a negative reaction in the Jewish community.'

And philanthropist Bluma Appel, after whom CanStage's flagship theater is named, concurred. 'I told them I would react very badly to a play that was offensive to Jews.'"

The Publicity and Communications Manager of CanStage is Valorie Block. You can reach her at this address. You might ask her if the theater company would block the play "The Diary of Anne Frank" if Germans complained. Ask her to pass along your letter to Martin Bragg. Send a copy to us.

Congress Gives Big Bag of Holiday Goodies to Israel

Reported in the Israeli paper Globesjust before it recessed the U.S. Congress voted to extend its multi-billion dollar loan guarantee program to Israel for three years. This is $4.4 billon in guarantees, which enables Israel to get lower interest on loans, a very big holiday plum.

"The Act also doubles a program to transfer to Israel obsolete or surplus stocks in the War Reserve Stockpile located in Israel, to $800 million and reauthorizes the administration to send to Israel items from these stores. " Obsolete. What is it? Gatling guns and muskets? Probably not. $400 million more is in the stash for Israel to draw up whenever it has an "emergency", like when it has to devastate a neighbor (like Lebanon).

MECC Takes Part in Phone Card Distribution to Vets

Several member of the Middle East Crisis Committee distributed over 100 phone cards to veterans at the West Haven Veterans Administration hospital a few days before Christmas. The cards were provided by a group of organizations, Veterans for Peace, Gold Star Mothers for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Code Pink and the credit card company Working Assets. MECC put each phone card in a greeting card that listed the names and web addresses of each of the sponsors. The veterans accepting the cards were all very appreciative and not at all put off that peace groups were behind the donations.
