Stop the Collective Punishment of the Palestinian Population
The cut off of international aid to Palestinian territories, the seizure of Palestinian tax monies by the Israeli government and the closing of crossings for trade to Israel and Egypt are creating new depths of suffering for Palestinians. Already people have died because of lack of medicine. This collective punishment is cruel and illegal.
In the belief that America should champion democracy and the rule of law and that our national security and international standing dictate that we foster peace and reconciliation, we find it abhorrent that our government is collectively punishing the Palestinian people because of their choice of leaders in a free and fair election. We believe it is unjust to adopt policies that will lead to the starvation of a civilian population.
We, therefore, call for the immediate resumption of dialogue between U.S. officials and the new duly elected Palestinian representatives and for the funneling of urgently needed economic assistance to the impoverished Palestinians. Moreover, we also call for our government to insist on the opening of the Gaza-Egypt crossing to allow the Palestinians to trade directly with the International Community, and on the return to the Palestinian government of the Palestinian tax monies currently being illegally withheld by Israel.
We further ask you to work for a final and just peaceful resolution to this conflict. Indeed, the solutions to the short-term humanitarian crisis and the long-term political crisis are based on the same principles: respect for human rights, civil rights, and International law. We ask you to ensure that these basic principles are upheld by proposing a solution to the conflict that is fully based on international law, as embodied in the U.N. Charter and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, which the United States has already voted for.
We further ask you to inform your constituents of the steps you plan to take to advance the cause of peace between Israelis and Palestinians, to safeguard American interest in this vital region and to restore our country's standing as a real champion of freedom, democracy and international law.
