Senate Supports Lieberman on Iran 97 to 0

Today the Senate voted 97 to 0 to pass Senator Lieberman’s amendment on Iran (Amendment 2073) to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 1585).

The amendment supports Lieberman's (and Bush's) totally bogus claim that Iran is at war with the US and provides the reasoning for a full military attack. Not one senator had the decency to object, not the "socialist" Bernie Sanders, nor the "furthest" anti-Iraq war critic Chris Dodd or any of the rest.

The amendment starts with a whole list of "findings of fact", list of allegations by US military commanders that Iraqis trained and armed by Iran are attacking Americans. Of course there's not one claim supported by the UN or any objective reporter. With its record of claiming "bulletproof" evidence nothing that Bush Adminisration alleges can be believed.

The amendment brands the Iranian acts as "murder".

Lieberman's amendment was itself amended with a line saying that nothing in the bill should be read as an authorization for an armed attack on Iran. So what? Liebeman's amendment is a treasure trove of charges that Bush can quote whenever he decides to launch "Shock and Awe 2".

US Killing 10,000 a Month in Iraq, Or is it More?

...These figures sound impossible to most Americans. Certainly 300 Iraqis killed by Americans each day would be headline news, over and over again. And yet, the electronic and print media simply do not tell us that the U.S. is killing all these people. We hear plenty about car bombers and death squads, but little about Americans killing Iraqis, except the occasional terrorist, and the even more occasional atrocity story.

How, then, is the US accomplishing this carnage, and why is it not newsworthy? The answer lies in another amazing statistic: this one released by the U.S. military and reported by the highly respectable Brookings Institution: for the past four years, the American military sends out something over 1000 patrols each day into hostile neighborhoods, looking to capture or kill insurgents and terrorists.[8] (Since February, the number has increased to nearly 5,000 patrols a day, if we include the Iraqi troops participating in the American surge.)...

Outrage in Israel Over Dropping of Rape Charge Against Katzav

Suspended Israeli President Moshe Katzav copped a plea and got rape charges against him dismissed. Attorney General Mazuz says Katzav will serve no jail time even though the charges he will admit to can carry a sentence of seven years in prison. He will plead guilty to "indecent assault" against one woman, "sexual harassment" against another and "harassment" against a witness and pay unspecified compensation. He will resign as Israeli President.

Katzav said, "I admitted to hugging and kissing out of affection." A little schoolboy naughtiness, evidently.

Upwards of 20,000 Israelis demonstrated against the plea bargain. One feminist leader was reported to have said, "This is our intifada".

Some of the secret testimony against Katzav was released. It included one victim's account of rape.

Revolting accounts of humiliation and abuse in the new report by "If Americans Knew" about the decades old Israeli practice of strip searching Palestinians and dissidents.
