MECC Condemns Lieberman's Statement Calling for War on Iran

The Middle East Crisis Committee has condemned Senator Joseph Lieberman's
call for a military attack on Iran. The 25 year old Connecticut based peace
organization brands his proposal as illegal, unnecessary and endangering our
troops.

Stanley Heller, MECC Chairperson said, "Senator Lieberman has proposed to
start a war of aggression against Iran. Iran has not attacked the United
States. The charge that Iran is training Iraqis to attack US forces in
Iraq is not only without foundation, but without logic. The Washington Post
reported on March 14 that Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
stated that he "has no evidence the Iranian government has been sending
military equipment and personnel into neighboring Iraq". In fact the
forces in Iraq most favorable to Iran are the leaders and parties of the
government of Iraq. These are people working directly with the US armed
forces, not attacking it."

"If the US attacked Iran it would cause the very problem Lieberman falsely
warns of now. Seeing Iranian nuclear facilities and military targets
bombed, Iraqi Shia would certainly join in the military resistance to the US
occupation and Iran would undoubtedly give them aid. Lieberman's plan would
get hundreds or thousands of Americans killed."

"There is no justification or reason for attacking Iran and hence such and
assault would be in violation of international law. What the Senator is
proposing is a grave war crime. He should immediately retract his
statement."

The Middle East Crisis Committee was established in New Haven in 1982. It
has educated and protested in support of human rights in the Middle East
opposing Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, Israel's oppression of
Palestinians, US support for Saddam Hussein in the '80s, Syrian occupation
of Lebanon, sanctions against Iraq and the US invasion of Iraq.
