Vanunu Convicted of Speaking to Foreigners


Mordechai Vanunu, who served 18 years in prison for warning about Israel's nuclear arsenal, has been convicted of speaking to foreigners. He will be sentenced on May 18.

The Israeli state which has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and which has committeed the war crime of aggression several time had the gall to kidnapp Vanunu in 1986 from London after he told the London Sunday Times about Israel's nuclear weapons. Vanunu had worked in a nuclear bomb factory in Dimona, Israel and produced photographic evidence of Israeli nuclear production.

Vanunu served every day of his 18 year sentence, mostly in solitary confinement. After he was released he was forbidden to have any contact with foreigners, including by internet and he was forbidden to leave Israel. In the court decision announced on May 1 Vanunu was also convicted of trying to go to Bethlehem.

The absurdity of Vanunu's limitations is apparent. He was barred from speaking to foreigners, but could freely speak to Israeli Arabs and Palestinians.

In reporting on the event the English language version of Ha'aretz used the headline "Whistleblower Vanunu convicted of violating terms of conditional release". In the '80's the media screamed "Traitor" at Vanunu.

No mention of the penalty that awaits Vanunu has been reported.

"Danger to the State"


April 7. Uri Avnery, Israeli peace activist, writes about his long career in his article ridiculing the Secret Police Chief announcement that the entire Israeli Arab population was a danger to the state
