To the Officers and Members of the National Education Association:

January 5, 2018

Iím a retired schoolteacher from Connecticut, 40 years teaching high and middle schools, also Executive Director of the Middle East Crisis Committee. Iíve been reading about the firing of Bahia Amawi in the Pflugerville Independent School District in Texas . Iím surprised to see nothing about the situation on your website or your FB page (going back to mid-Dec.). I find it outrageous that the state of Texas thinks it can tell residents of the state what to say and do about foreign affairs. Amawi is taking a fine position in favor of Palestinian rights. I, a Jewish-American, try to do the same. I boycott Israeli goods to protest government abuses against Palestinians.

I was head of my local teacher union in West Haven, CT in the 1970ís. We took part in boycotts when places went on strike or when workers couldnít strike and asked for help. Itís an age-old and effective tactic.

I understand that Amawi is not a regular employee of the school district, technically a contractor. That shouldnít matter. If Governor Abbott is successful in getting his way here thereís little to stop him from demanding this ďpledgeĒ from every teacher in Texas.

I hope the NEA will stand in support of Amawi, that it will educate members on the issue, make public statements about her right to buy or not buy Israeli products and her free speech rights and will contribute to her lawsuit.

Iíve written an article on the subject that you might find of interest.

It is here on the website of New Politics Magazine.
