"Reap Them"

That's what the commander said October 29, 1956 when he ordered his Israeli army soldiers to shoot to death four villagers in Kafr Kassem, Israel. We know this because one survived and played dead. This was the beginning of a horrific massacre of 49 Israeli citizens (Palestinians) who had come back to their village after curfew. The curfew time had been changed to an hour earlier, but no one had told the farmers in the fields and they were mowed down as they returned home.

Some 5,000 people marked the 50th anniversary of the massacre with a rally in the Israeli town. They called on the Israeli government to make it an official day of memorial.

Several of the army officers who ordered the massacre were found guilty of relatively minor offenses, served short sentences and went on to illustrious government careers. The Director of the Defense Ministry at the Time was Shimon Peres. He want on become Prime Minister in 1984 and again in 1996. (The first Qana massacre took place during a'96 attack on Lebanon.) He is now being mentioned to succeed current Israeli President and Katzav (who is under investigation for rape).

At the rally in Kafr Kassem speakers mentioned their "prize" for the 50th anniversary, the addition to the Israeli government of racist Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman, who calls for the expulsion from Israel of its Palestinian-Arab citizens was installed on the very day of the anniversary.
