NYC RallyA large, energetic and emotional demonstration supporting striking Oaxacan teachers and condemning the violence used against them and their supporters by the Mexican government was held at NYC's Mexican consul yesterday. About 200 people attended. Many artistic banners were displayed; most depicting slain IndyMedia journalist Brad Will whose home base was NYC. 12 people were arrested, both for planned civil disobedience and unexpectedly, including at least one reporter. Some police officers were unnecessarily rough, causing at least one serious injury that I know of. Several Mexicans who were at the consulate on business stayed with the demonstration as it began. "Democracy Now!" covered the NYC action, details from Oaxaca including Sunday's invastion by federal police, and a retrospective of slain U.S. journalist Brad Will's life yesterday morning. Depending on what your computer is capable of, you can listen or watch at http://www.democracynow.org/. New Haven-based reporter Melinda Tuhus' report from NYC can be found here. (NOTE: She also covered for WQUN radio -1220 a.m. - a related event organized by Raul Rivera that happened last night in Fair Haven; those reports should be running on WQUN's newscasts throughout the day.) Melinda just informed me that there was virtually NO coverage by the New York Times of yesterday's NYC action, save for a bland photo in the Metro section of one demonstrator being arrested; this, despite the fact that a Times reporter, Colin Moynihan, attended and covered the entire event. For more news of the NYC demo and arrests, of other similar actions around the U.S. and the world, and details of Oaxaca's continuing struggle click here. I arrived home from NYC yesterday to a brief email from Kate saying that Monday was a relatively quiet, devastated day in Oaxaca. Please continue your vigilance and your prayers on behalf of all those who are still struggling for peaceful justice and still at risk, not just in Oaxaca but throughout our exhausted world . . . If you're looking for one single action to take that might well make a difference, my friend Cyd called the Mexican consul in NYC and spoke with Eduardo Penaloza, who seemed sympathetic and suggested that he would forward any emails he received to the appropriate persons: epenaloza@sre.gob.mx. In gratitude, in peace, with hope, Victorya |
